BRG- Chapter 4

Business Use Case

Objective: Discussion of the fail-safe way of partitioning the work and so smooth the way for your requirements investigation.

Understanding the Work

The solution that a BA intends to publish should improve/enhance the working of the business. To implement change sometimes the scope can be too large to understand in one piece, hence it becomes important to decompose the scope into smaller parts.
The bubble in the middle of the above figure is the work or the business area. The scope which is agreed upon during the blastoff phase includes an adjacent system where the actual business work is defined. The tasks in the adjacent system supply data to the work and/or receives data from it.  The business event happens in the adjacent systems. The business event usually produces a demand for the service provided by the work(bubble). The response to the work makes the business event and is called a business use case. It involves all the processes and data necessary to make the response. From here the requirements are critically analyzed in collaboration with the stakeholders and then the appropriate product is designed.
Main features of BUC:
  1. They are "natural" partitions-each one makes an obvious and logical contribution to the work.
  2. they have minimal connectivity to other parts of the work.
  3. They have clearly defined scope.
  4. They have rules for defining their scope
  5. They have boundaries that can be observed and defined.
  6. They can be named using names that are recognizable to stakeholders.
  7. their existence can be readily determined.
  8. they one or more stakeholders who are experts for the part of the work.

Formality guide

Three categories:
  1. Rabbit: Strong understanding of Business Use case helps reduce the time spent on documentation which is essential to lessen the time spent on delivering inappropriate solutions.
  2. Horse: These projects focus on partitioning the work area(bubble) using BUC.
  3. Elephant: These projects use Business events because of a large number of stakeholders involved. BUC scenarios are ideal for discussing the work in geographically distributed teams.

Business Event

Any piece of work responding to things happening outside it.

Time-Triggered Business Event

Business events are initiated by the arrival of a predetermined time or data or event.

Business Use Case and Product Use Case

The idea of deriving product use case from the business use case means that requirements are grouped together according to the response work's response to the business event. The result is the product which is responsive and apt to the user needs as well as requirements.

  1. As a Business Analyst, first thing, we need to understand the work such as understand the business problem, finding and expressing the solution for the problem. If the problem is too hard, they can divide the problem into smaller parts and solve each part of the work. The Business Event is the event that happens to the business while the Business Use Case and Product Use Case are an external view response from the companies. Business Analyst should develop the business use case because it helps to improve communication between team members, understand the business processes, discover gaps between the requirements and the delivered product and ensure the delivered product works properly. Moreover, to know about the Formality guide is also important because it plays an important role in business success and the success of the project.

Business use cases permit to cut out a bit of the work for further modeling and study. As we are implementing CRM tool in IG wealth management, business use case helps to know the need and requirements.it is always presented well documented.
